Kodo millet upma is a nutritious and delicious South Indian breakfast dish made with kodo millet, which is a type of small millet. Here’s a simple recipe for making kodo millet upma:
Ingredients of Kodo Millet Upma
- 1 cup Kodo millet
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 green chilli, chopped
- 1/2 inch ginger, grated
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
- A few curry leaves
- Salt to taste
- 1 tbsp oil
- Water as required
How to Make Kodo Millet Upma
- Rinse the Kodo millet in water a few times and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions, green chilli, and grated ginger. Sauté for a minute.
- Add chopped tomatoes and sauté until they turn soft and mushy.
- Drain the soaked kodo millet and add it to the pan. Mix well.
- Add water in a 1:2 ratio (1 cup millet to 2 cups water) and salt to taste. Mix well.
- Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low heat until the Kodo millet is cooked and the water is absorbed. This should take around 15-20 minutes.
- Once the Kodo millet is cooked, switch off the flame and let it rest for 5 minutes.
- Fluff the upma with a fork and serve hot with coconut chutney or tomato chutney.
