Jowar upma is a healthy and delicious breakfast dish made using jowar (sorghum) grains. Here’s a simple recipe to make jowar upma:
Ingredients of Jowar Upma
- 1 cup Jowar grains
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, finely chopped
- 1 green chilli, chopped
- 1/2 inch ginger, grated
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1 tsp chana dal
- 1 sprig of curry leaves
- Salt to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
- 2 cups water
How to Make Jowar Upma
- Rinse the jowar grains and soak them in water for 2-3 hours. Drain the water and keep the soaked jowar aside.
- Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add cumin seeds, urad dal, chana dal and fry till they turn golden brown.
- Add curry leaves, chopped onion, green chilli and grated ginger. Sauté until the onion turns translucent.
- Add chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and mushy.
- Add the soaked jowar and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
- Add 2 cups of water and salt to taste. Mix well and let it come to a boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the jowar is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Fluff up the jowar with a fork and serve hot.
Your healthy and tasty jowar upma is ready to be enjoyed! You can garnish it with chopped coriander leaves and serve it with coconut chutney or tomato chutney.
