Kodo millet upma is a nutritious and delicious South Indian breakfast dish made with kodo millet.

1 cup Kodo millet 1 onion, chopped 1 tomato, chopped 1 green chilli, chopped 1/2 inch ginger, grated 1/2 tsp mustard seeds 1/2 tsp cumin seeds 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing) A few curry leaves Salt to taste 1 tbsp oil Water as required

Step 1

Rinse the Kodo millet in water a few times and soak it in water for 30 minutes.

Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.

Add chopped onions, green chilli, and grated ginger. Saute for a minute.

Add chopped tomatoes and sauté until they turn soft and mushy.

Drain the soaked kodo millet and add it to the pan. Mix well.

Add water in a 1:2 ratio (1 cup millet to 2 cups water) and salt to taste. Mix well.

Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low heat until the Kodo millet is cooked and the water is absorbed. This should take around 15-20 minutes.

Once the Kodo millet is cooked, switch off the flame and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Fluff the upma with a fork and serve hot with coconut chutney or tomato chutney. Enjoy your healthy and delicious Kodo millet upma.
