Ingredients of Kodo Millet Upma

  • 1 cup Kodo millet
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 green chilli, chopped
  • 1/2 inch ginger, grated
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • Water as required

How to Make Kodo Millet Upma

  1. Rinse the Kodo millet in water a few times and soak it in water for 30 minutes.
  2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions, green chilli, and grated ginger. Sauté for a minute.
  4. Add chopped tomatoes and sauté until they turn soft and mushy.
  5. Drain the soaked kodo millet and add it to the pan. Mix well.
  6. Add water in a 1:2 ratio (1 cup millet to 2 cups water) and salt to taste. Mix well.
  7. Cover the pan with a lid and cook on low heat until the Kodo millet is cooked and the water is absorbed. This should take around 15-20 minutes.
  8. Once the Kodo millet is cooked, switch off the flame and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  9. Fluff the upma with a fork and serve hot with coconut chutney or tomato chutney.
