Ingredients of Indonesian Nasi Goreng

  • 4 cups cooked rice, chilled
  • 1/2 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 shallots, sliced
  • 1 red chilli pepper, chopped
  • 1 carrot, diced
  • 1/2 cup green beans, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce or oyster sauce
  • 2 eggs, fried (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying

How to Make Indonesian Nasi Goreng

  1. Heat a tablespoon of oil in a wok or frying pan over high heat. Add the shrimp and stir-fry until cooked through, then set aside.
  2. Add a little more oil to the pan and sauté the garlic, onion, and shallots until fragrant.
  3. Add the chilli pepper, carrot, and green beans and stir-fry for a minute or two.
  4. Add the chilled cooked rice and stir-fry until heated through and lightly browned.
  5. Add the soy sauce, kecap manis, and fish sauce or oyster sauce and continue to stir-fry for another minute or two.
  6. Add the cooked shrimp and mix well.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
  8. Serve the Nasi Goreng with a fried egg on top, if desired.
