Battered fish is a popular dish made by coating fish fillets in a mixture of flour, cornstarch, salt, baking powder, and soda water, then deep-frying until golden brown and crispy. The batter helps to protect the delicate flesh of the fish while it cooks, while also adding a delicious crunch to the dish.

Ingredients of Batter Fish
- 4-6 fish fillets (such as cod, haddock, or pollock)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 cup beer or soda water
- Vegetable oil, for frying
- Lemon wedges and tartar sauce, for serving (optional)
How to Make Batter Fish
- Rinse the fish fillets and pat them dry with paper towels. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Gradually add the beer or soda water and whisk until a smooth batter forms.
- Heat enough oil in a large, deep skillet or a deep fryer to reach a depth of about 1 inch. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).
- Dip each fish fillet into the batter, making sure it’s evenly coated. Let any excess batter drip off before carefully placing the fillet into the hot oil. Fry the fillets in batches, turning occasionally, until they’re golden brown and crispy, about 3-5 minutes.
- Use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the cooked fillets onto a plate lined with paper towels to drain off any excess oil.
- Serve the battered fish hot, with lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side, if desired. Enjoy!
